The Ruins is the story of Lucie, left at the age of seven, in 1937, by her mother Ruth at a railway station in the care of eccentric relatives she has never met. Ruth then returns to Malaya with her husband and effectively vanishes from Lucie’s childhood. Lucie is bewildered, suspended in an emotional void: why was she left, why was she not deserving of being kept?
WW2 erupts, and the fractures in Lucie’s family stretch even wider. As she grows up, she must put the pieces back together, reconcile secrets, lies and loss. Over two decades, it takes her from Devon, Bath and Bristol, to London, to Ceylon – and eventually to the point of courage where she decides her own identity and her own future…
