Cross Country
Last Saturday, the Kingswood Cross Country team headed to Downside for their first fixture of the season. We were able to field a strong Inter Boys team and Senior Girls team, both of which won their team events comfortably. In the Inter Boys, the Year 9 trio of Charlie, Ferdie and Theo ran clear of the field to give Kingswood a 1,2,3 finish; whilst in the Senior Girls, Evie dominated from start to finish to come home first, with Grace making a late break to make third place ahead of Emily 4th and Grace 5th. Unfortunately, due to some late withdrawal’s from the event, we were unable to field a full Senior Boys team, however, this did not stop Seb from running in strongly to take a good third place. Indeed, his sprint finish duel for second place after 7km was a highlight for all spectators. Max and Hiroki also ran well on a long course.
At this point in the season, the Cross Country team would like to announce that Evie and Seb will be our joint captains for the season.
Netball
Last Saturday, Kingswood had nearly 200 girls competing as the Netball Club had nineteen teams against local rivals, KES. Overall, KES managed to win the block but there were a number of matches that were very close and could have gone either way. Moving forward, Kingswood needs to work on driving with purpose towards the ball and be more consistent under the post.
The Seniors had strong wins by the 2nds and 3rds. In the 2nds, Edie and Sienna were outstanding in defence and denied KES from scoring numerous times, finishing with a well-deserved 21-12 win. The 3rds won their match 30-19 and shooters Emily, Imogen and Sophie all contributed well. Holly was pivotal in the middle and Grace, Monica and Ciara all made crucial interceptions.
Team of the Week is the U12As who were dominant in all areas of the court and won 24-11. Esme was versatile as she impacted at either end of the court and Sophie and Amelie read the game beautifully and gained possession countless times. They are certainly a team to watch out for as they show so much potential!
The Netball Club would like to appoint both Maya and Annie as Co-Captains this season and we wish them the very best of luck.
Hockey
It was a really quite outstanding first week for our boys’ hockey teams. Dean Close are well regarded as one of the strongest hockey schools in the country, so to win nine and draw one of the ten fixtures was an exceptional effort from the Kingswood boys. There were some big wins in there too, scoring 42 goals and conceding just 9 in the process. Three teams secured 8-0 wins including both U14s and the 2nd XI for whom Will scored five goals in his first match playing as a forward. Dan and James were the stand-out players for the U15 teams as they had much tighter games, Felix scoring a late winner for the ‘A’ team and Ed also excellent for the Bs. Tom was Man of the Match for the U16s, scoring a wonder goal in the process.
The U14s could certainly have claimed the Team of the Week award as they played some sublime passing hockey to overpower their counterparts. However, the Year 7s get the award this week. All three teams secured victories in their first matches, which was made even more impressive by the fact that a third of the players involved were playing their first ever game of hockey!
The 1st XI also came up with an 8-0 win against Monkton Combe in the National Cup last Wednesday, with Will scoring 4 goals and Joe picking up the Man of the Match award.
After such a great start to the term, the Hockey club would now like to announce Rob as the captain of Hockey for this season.
